The region is known for its high quality food and wines, which produce most of the country`s citrus fruits, almonds and dried apricots, as well as nearly a third of Australian grapes. A healthy river is essential not only for these large wetlands, but also for the communities and industries that depend on its water. There are a number of environmental projects in and around the Riverland to ensure a healthy Murray River now and in the future. There are a number of national and natural parks throughout the area, including Murray River National Park and Chowilla Game Reserve and Regional Reserve, which offer camping, canoeing, fishing and bird watching opportunities. The Riverland is also an important tourist destination, popular for barges, exploring cellar doors, visiting historic sites and outdoor activities for nature lovers. The region includes unique wetlands and floodplaons, three of which are internationally recognized for their main ecosystems.
